DAY OF THE DEAD
-
DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS 2021

As Halloween approaches, so — more somberly — does the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead or Día de los Muertos, traditionally Nov. 1. This community art project hosted by the Latinos Organizing for Understanding and Development (LOUD) and partners celebrates the distinctive and sometimes macabre iconography of the day. Community members are encouraged to make their own altars, according to Mexican tradition, to remember loved ones. Anyone can participate, creating a shadow box altar to honor someone who has passed.

THE COMMUNITY ALTAR PROJECT

This year hosted in collaboration with the Latin American, Caribbean, and Iberian Studies Program at UW Madison.

The Community Altar Project is designed to help us build bridges between the individual and the community, life and death, sorrow and celebration. This participatory draws on the thoughtful process of creating a public altar of remembrance of people who have passed. The project is inspired by the altar making traditions in Mexico for Day of the Dead but community and personal altars of remembrance are in many traditions, all over the world.
